Promoting independent media: stories, standards and change documents

The Sida-funded International Training Programme (ITP) Media Development in a Democratic Framework programme set out to strengthen independent news media by improving legal frameworks, advancing self-regulation, and empowering media professionals to drive positive change in their own organisations. Over multiple years and cohorts, the project supported journalists and media actors across the globe in enhancing credibility, professionalism, and trust in the media sector.

To showcase this progress and ensure the programme’s learning continues well beyond its final year, NIRAS delivered a suite of high-value communications products. We produced an illustrated reference book — Legal Frameworks & Professional Standards for Independent News Media — as well as a practical How to Make Change Happen guide, both used widely for teaching, peer learning, and dissemination by the client and our partners.

Our team also documented success stories through engaging news features, spotlighting participant achievements and drawing connections with other ITPs NIRAS has implemented. Complementing the written storytelling, we developed a series of low-cost videos that captured participants’ voices and shared their change journeys in an accessible and authentic way.

To preserve and present the programme’s extensive knowledge outputs, we wrapped the final deliverables — publications, reports, and media assets — into a dedicated online project page that continues to serve as a valuable repository for media development professionals worldwide.

Through strategic storytelling and thoughtful design, we helped ensure that ITP Media’s impact is not only recorded, but shared — supporting the ongoing evolution of independent journalism and democratic public dialogue.
