Our main mission in the NIRAS International Consulting Communications team (COMMS) is to work with NIRAS project managers to turn complex development results into compelling visuals and narratives that resonate with public audiences and policymakers. We work across a variety of fields and with diverse clients where we are sensitive to government communication protocols, approval processes, and visibility requirements (e.g., EU Visibility Guidelines, Team Europe branding, project branding etc).

To build lasting competence, we provide tailored training—online or in person—covering social media management (with a strong focus on LinkedIn), media engagement and interview skills, photography and video basics for capturing field content, brand consistency and visual identity application, and internal communications best practices to strengthen collaboration across complex project teams.

In addition, NIRAS has extensive experience in managing projects where communications and visibility (C&V) is the key objective. Many of these projects are listed in the references section, and – for the most part – this work is carried out by a team of communications professionals hired specifically for the assignment. Our in-house COMMS team supports these and other projects with a variety of services and amplifies the results on NIRAS-managed platforms.

Communications that reach people where they are
End-to-end communications
The “Communication and Visibility of the EU and Tanzania Partnership” is an example of NIRAS-implemented project where the entire team was comprised of external communications experts whose task was to boost awareness of the partnership between the EU and Tanzania (including within the East African Community regional integration). The project included the delivery of campaigns on various topics such as a climate change. The ‘Resilience!’ campaign was launched on Europe Day and ended with ahigh-level meeting to debate issues around renewable energy and introduce EU projects. Resilience! put the community first by including school children, their families and local authorities to engage activities such as tree planting, a beach clean-up and a cyclethon. School children were also given the opportunity to develop their own 3D cities of our future designs and were awarded for their work by Ambassadors of Member States. The communications team produced monthly social media calendars which covered international days and EU events using speeches, quote cards and infographics, banners, video and text. Press events were organised regularly and op-eds were also published in mainstream newspapers in Tanzania.

Storytelling is always an important component of our communications as our focus is to showcase human interest stories of heroes and champions who beneficiaries can relate to and learn from, mobilising them into action. Likewise these stories can be targeted at other stakeholders involved directly/indirectly in core project activities to raise awareness about the needs and expectations of the market so services and products can be better targeted or communicated more effectively.
As regards character-driven success stories, we aim to employ a mix of impactful images, succinct copy and stand-out quotes to bring the narrative to life.
Multi-channel storytelling that elevates project visibility
We use our own NIRAS platforms to amplify project outcomes. Our LinkedIn channel is very active and our main communications channel to experts, partners and donors. We showcase projects on our website’s project page, share news milestones, and highlight projects’ impact on beneficiaries through personal Stories from the Field, for example. Insights – our blog series – is a space for staff and experts to share learnings, field realities or how challenges were solved in projects. Content is reshared in our monthly newsletter, Inspiring Change, and via our partners’ networks.
